Recall Fatigue
With recalled products being pulled from shelves every day, it is almost impossible for the consumer to keep up with the flood of information available. Many people don't even realize the product they bought is being recalled, while others simply choose to ignore it. This is known as 'recall fatigue', and the result is that only about 30% of all recalled products are ever returned.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is a federal agency which regulates some 15,000 consumer products used in and around the home and is involved with approximately 500 recalls a year. The CPSC is currently struggling to administer new rules to the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act which will teach industries how to import and sell products that are in compliance with the standards and regulations of safety. While consumers will respond to a recall that they have been notified directly about, the CPSC hopes to avoid the problem by stopping the product from reaching consumers in the first place.
