Insurance While Driving Someone's Car
When you buy insurance for your car, that insurance is connected to that car, and it shouldn't matter who is driving. It should be noted, however, that every state has different laws as well as every insurance company has different policies. If it isn't stated in your policy, it is best to check with your insurance company. Make sure you get this information in writing!
In most standard policies, the coverage you have on your vehicle is the same as the coverage someone else would get while driving your vehicle. Some policies may have an endorsement that drops limits down to the state minimum for drivers that do not own the car. In non standard policies the driver may have no coverage at all.
In any instance, if your vehicle is in an accident, your insurance premiums are likely to go up. If you are unsure of what your insurance company covers, it is best not to loan out your vehicle or to ask your insurer about an insurance policy for non-car owners.
