Denture Creams And Zinc Poisoning
Thirty four million Americans wear dentures and about a third of them use denture creme to hold them in place. A group of these people have experienced difficulty with balance and walking, forcing once independent people to use wheelchairs or walkers to get around. According to a study published in neurology journals this could be due to excessive zinc build from zinc in denture creams.
The human body requires a minimum amount of zinc for a balanced diet, but when your intake level is higher than forty milligrams, it becomes toxic. This is called "hyperzincemia". Hyperzincemia can lead to complications such as anemia, neutropenia, alzheimers, "hypocupremia" (depletion of copper in the body) and Wilson's disease. Very often doctors will diagnose people with Multiple Sclerosis since symptoms are so similar.
Lawsuits have been filed against the makers of denture adhesives, including Fixodent, PoliGrip, and Super PoliGrip, alleging the products caused zinc poisoning that led to severe and disabling injuries. The lawsuits were filed following the release of research that linked overuse of denture creams to neurological problems.
