Elderly Abuse
As the baby boomer population ages, the need for care for the elderly also increases. It may be difficult for someone to put their elderly loved one in a facility, but the responsibility and demand of caregiving can become difficult and demanding as that persons condition deteriorates. Many people turn to homes for the elderly in hopes of getting the care their loved one needs.
Even in institutional settings, the elderly can experience abuse. In many cases the abuse is unintentional, but nursing home staff may lack training, have too many responsibilities, are unsuited to care giving, or work under poor conditions which could lead to abuse.
Abuse can take many different forms:
- Physical abuse
- Emotional abuse
- Sexual abuse
- Neglect by the caregiver or self neglect
- Financial exploitation
- Health care fraud and abuse
While it’s important for elders to seek refuge from abuse, either by calling a local agency or telling a doctor or trusted friend, many seniors don't. They may be unable to, fear retaliation from the abuser or believe that if they turn in their abusers, no one else will take care of them. When the caregivers are their children, they may be ashamed that their children are behaving abusively or blame themselves. Often, they do not want the children they love to get into trouble with the law.
If you are an elder who is being abused, neglected, or exploited, tell at least one person. Tell your doctor, a friend, or a family member whom you trust. You can also call Eldercare Locator at 1-800-677-1116. The person who answers the phone will refer you to a local agency that can help. If you are a care giver and feel you may need help, they can also help you.
