Egg Recall Not A Big Surprise
The recent nationwide egg recall issued by two Iowa farms, comes at no surprise, as the supplier to these farms has a history of health, safety, animal welfare and employment violations over the years.
Austin DeCoster, supplier to Wright County Egg and Quality Egg, has a list of fines.
- The first goes back as far as 1997 where the company agreed to pay $2 million in fines for citations relating to health and safety violations.
- In 2000 the state of Iowa labeled them a "habitual violator" of environmental regulations.
- In 2002 the company faced allegations of employment discrimination, sexual harassment and abuse.
- In 2007, they were raided by immigration where 51 illegal workers were arrested.
- And finally, in 2010, DeCoster, now known as Main Contract Farming, paid over $120,000 in fines and penalties over allegations of animal cruelty.
Federal officials are still trying to establish a connection between DeCoster and the salmonella tainted eggs. According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control, the number of illnesses is estimated to be as high as 1,300 people, and is expected to be even higher. The company is already facing two lawsuits related to the egg recall.
