Cold Therapy Devices Could Lead To Nerve Damage
Cold therapy devices are used by surgery and joint injury patients to reduce swelling. The device pumps ice water to a pad on the swollen area giving the patient relief for extended periods of time. The problem with these devices is that they lack safety mechanisms to protect the user, and there is little instruction given when prescribed. Because surgery and ice therapy can desensitize the affected area, patients could suffer from nerve damage, chronic pain and even frost bite.
If you are prescribed cold therapy by your doctor, Take Precautions! Cold therapy is not for everyone. It should not be used by the very young or the very old. If you have impaired blood circulation, cold hypersensitivity, hypertension, and/or diminished or absent sensation, you should avoid cold therapy. Always ask your doctor, if you have any concerns.
