Statin Medications Increase Risk Of Muscle Injury
Clinical data has led the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to believe that there is an uncreased risk of muscle injury in patients taking the highest approved dose of statin medications. Statin medications are used to lower cholesterol.
The muscle injury, also called myopathy, is a known side effect with all "statin" medications. Patients with myopathy generally have muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, and an elevation of a muscle enzyme in the blood. The higher the dose of statin used, the greater the risk of developing myopathy. The risk of myopathy is also increased when this medication is used with other drugs.
Do not use statin with these medications:
- Itraconazole
- Ketoconazole
- Erythromycin
- Clarithromycin
- Telithromycin
- HIV protease inhibitors
- Nefazodone
Do not use more than 10mg of statin with these medications:
- Gemfibrozil
- Cyclosporine
- Danazol
Do not use more than 20mg of statin with these medications:
- Amiodarone
- Verapamil
Do not use more than 40mg of statin with this medication:
- Diltiazem
If you are taking a statin medication to lower cholesterol, talk to your doctor if you have any concerns or if you are experiencing any side effects.
