Used Cars VS Certified Pre-Owned Cars

Certified pre-owned (CPO) is used to describe later-model, low-mileage used cars that have passed inspection and are backed by a factory warranty or a service contract. These vehicles are usually in better shape than the average used car and have a history of regular maintenance and accident-free operation. Most often, these cars were new leased vehicles that have been maintained by the customer in order to get the maximum for the car when the lease is up.

CPO vehicles have become popular because the consumer feels that the vehicle is reliable. Some feel that the CPO "stamp" is just a way for the auto dealerships to sell the vehicle for more money. Below are a few tips when buying a pre-owned vehicle.

  • Make sure you ask questions when buying a pre-owned car and if you do decide to buy, make sure you get everything in writing. Different auto manufacturers will offer different CPO programs, so compare before you buy.
  • Many warranties offered will be limited, so make sure you know what is covered and what is not.
  • If the car is sold as dealership certified pre-owned, be cautious. The dealership could disappear. With a manufacturer backed certified pre-owned vehicle you are not limited to just one dealership for warranty service.
  • Make sure you check the vehicle out yourself. Don't take it for granted that because it is certified that the car is automatically good.
  • Finally, don't be afraid to negotiate the price. Certified pre-owned does not mean you have to pay the price that the dealership is asking for.
