Acetaminophen Based Drugs Linked To Asthma
A study published online by the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine suggests that teenagers taking acetaminophen based drugs, (like Tylenol) at least once a month are more than twice as likely to have asthma than those that do not. Once per month users were also twice as likely to have eczema as well as persistent stuffy noses and water eyes. The researchers collected data on 322,959 children ages 13 and 14 in 50 different countries.
While the study does not prove that acetaminophen causes asthma, the researchers say that the results strongly suggest that there may be a connection. The researchers said parents should not stop giving their children acetaminophen without talking to their doctors first. They recommend that randomized controlled trials be performed to determine whether there is a causal connection before any actions can be taken.
