Dealership Sues Customer Over Car Price

Have you ever gone into a car dealership and bought a car at a really good price? That's exactly what happened to Tammie Townsend of Golden Valley, Minnesota. In October Tammie decided to buy out her 2007 Chrysler Pacifica which she had been leasing for two years. Under her 2007 lease with the dealership, she had the right to buy the car for about $18,500, but when she signed the papers to convert the lease to a sale the price was about $6,000 less than the car's blue book value. A few weeks later, Tammie got a phone call from the dealership saying there was a mistake and that she owed about $6,000 more on the car.

Walser Chrysler says it made an "administrative error" when it sold the vehicle to Townsend for less. "She was told several times what the correct price was," said Doug Sprinthall, vehicle operations director for Walser Automotive Group. Instead of accepting the loss, the dealership blames Townsend, saying she should have spoken up before accepting the discount on the car. When Tammie refused to pay the money, Walser Chrysler delivered a lawsuit to her door accusing her of fraud and unjust enrichment.

Tammie has hired a lawyer and believes the dealer should stand by the deal they signed. She has locked the Pacifica in a friend's garage because she's convinced the dealership will do whatever it can to get it back.
