BMW Fined For Slow Recall Response
BMW North America will be fined $3 million for failing to promptly notify the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) about safety defects and recalls. The NHTSA reported several disclosure violations related to 16 investigations involving over 100,000 automobiles and motorcycles recalled in 2010. These violations include, not notifying the NHTSA of automobile defects within five business days and taking too long to provide updated information on recalls. As part of the settlement, BMW and its parent company Bayerische Motoren Werke AG agreed to make internal changes to its recall decision-making process to ensure timely reporting to the federal government in future. The settlement does not constitute an admission of guilt by BMW.
